ENTREVISTA a Ellen Schreiber (Autora de Vampire Kisses)

¡¡¡Hola a todos!!! Hi, everybody!!!!
Tengo el gran placer de haber entrevistado para Juvenil Romántica a Ellen Schreiber, una magnifica persona!!!!!
Por supuesto, quiero agradecer especialmente a Irene Muzás Calpe, una auténtica profesional, toda la ayuda en el proceso, traduciendo mis palabras para Ellen. MUCHÍSIMAS GRACIAS IRENE!! Eres un sol!!!!
Eso sí, amigos-lectores, si no habéis leído aún VK, ateneos a las consecuencias, pero si por el contrario habéis podido disfrutar de esta magnífica historia de amor y humor a la que hacemos protagonista hoy....... Guardaros de beber agua, refrescos u otros tipos de líquidos, porque puede que acabéis duchando a vuestros ordenadores. A esta chica no le falta la simpatía y, por supuesto, tampoco un buen humor!!
Si queréis conocer en español de qué tratan las historias que aún no nos han llegado a España de ella, lo que ocurrirá en las siguientes entregas de Vampire Kisses, los actores que ella elegiría para Raven y Alex y como se hizo el comic (justo ahora, en esta semana, que es el Expocomic en Madrid, jejeje, y yo voy!!!) No podéis parar de leer!!!

JR: Acabas de finalizar el Pitch Black: Books With Bite Tour (El Lanzamiento Negro: EL tour de libros con mordisco. http://harperteen-pitchblack.com) junto a otras dos reconocidas escritoras: Claudia Gray (de la cual ya se ha traído uno de sus libros a España recientemente) y Nancy Collins. ¿Podrías decirnos que es lo que más te ha gustado o impresionado de esta experiencia? ¿Alguna anécdota?

''JR: You have just finished Pitch Black: Books With Bite Tour (http://harperteen-pitchblack.com) that you have written together with two other renowned authors: Claudia Gray (who has recently published her book in Spain) and Nancy Collins. We would like to know what you have enjoyed most of this experience and whether there is any anecdote you can tell us about.E. S: I enjoyed having other authors with me on the road and at the book signings. They were very fun and nice to hang out with!

When were in Maine--which is known for fresh lobsters--I being the seafood novice felt I had to partake. I was reassured that I was only going to be eating lobster meat. However, when it showed up, the whole lobster was sitting on my fettucine. I turned green! Eyes and tentacles were staring back at me and I thought I might faint. Nancy came to my rescue and eventually my lobster and Claudia's were resting on bread plates and buried underneath linen napkins. Fine dining is wasted on me. :)''
E. S: Me lo pasé muy bien junto a las otras autoras tanto mientras viajábamos como en las firmas de libros. ¡Son muy divertidas y muy majas! Cuando visitamos Maine (famosa por sus langostas frescas), yo, siendo como era una novata en lo que a marisco se refiere, pensé que tenía que probarlo. Me aseguraron que sólo iba a comer la carne de la langosta. Pero cuando me trajeron el plato, había una langosta entera encima de mis fettucini. ¡Me volví verde! Sus ojos y sus tentáculos se me quedaron mirando y creí que me iba a desmayar. Nancy vino al rescate y tanto mi langosta como la de Claudia acabaron en los platos del pan, enterrados bajo las servilletas. Eché a perder una deliciosa cena. ;)


JR: Vampire Kisses acaba de ser traído por ediciones Nabla a España, cuya saga ya era conocida por el primer volumen manga traído anteriormente al país, ¿Cómo te propusieron la idea de que se hiciera Vampire Kisses en dibujo? ¿Participaste en la creación de los personajes junto a su dibujante REM, en el diseño de los trajes o los diálogos?

''JR: Vampire Kisses has just been published in Spain by Nabla Ediciones, but the saga was already known in Spain thanks to the first volume of the manga that had been published. How were you told about Vampire Kisses being adapted to comicbook? Did you participate in the making of the characters, the designing of their clothes or the dialogues themselves with REM, the artist?

E. S: HarperCollins approached me about turning VK into a manga. Tokyopop had just joined HC for an imprint and wanted to turn some of their novels into graphic novel form. I was ecstatic!!! I write the stories, plots, characters, descriptions, and as much dialogue as I need. Rem transforms them into sketches and then fully illustrated gems! She is able to capture the essence and humor of the characters and also adds some really hot clothes! ' '

E. S: HarperCollins me comentaron sobre el pasar VK en manga. Tokyopop se había unido a HC para unas publicaciones y quería adaptar algunas de sus novelas a novela gráfica. ¡Me quedé alucinada! Yo escribo las historias, las tramas, los personajes, las descripciones y todo el diálogo que necesito. Rem lo transforma en dibujos y luego...¡en auténticas joyas ilustradas! Es capaz de captar la esencia y el humor de los personajes añadiendo unos diseños de ropa realmente preciosos.


JR: Últimamente, el género de vampiros con adolescentes y amor ha hecho BOOM en el mercado editorial. Como escritora para un público juvenil, ¿cuál es tu opinión profesional al respecto? ¿Por qué justo ahora está causando tanto éxito? ¿Es realmente el ingrediente clave: Vampiros?

''JR: It seems that lately vampire romance with teenagers is a publishing BOOM. As a YA writer, what is your professional opinion about such a phenomenon? Why precisely now for such success? Are vampires the key?
E. S: I think eternal love is so exciting. And vampires are sexy, aren't they? Who doesn't want to get a nibble on the neck from a hot guy? I also think vampires are outsiders, trapped in a mortal world. That makes them vulnerable as well as powerful.''
E. S: Creo que el amor eterno es muy emocionante. Y los vampiros son sexy, ¿no? ¿Quién no quiere que un tío bueno no le de un mordisquito en el cuello? También creo que los vampiros son unos personajes al margen, atrapados en un mundo mortal, lo que les hace vulnerables a la vez que poderosos.


JR: En tu biografía se menciona que una de tus grandes pasiones es el teatro, además, también ha sido parte de tu profesión. ¿Por qué teatro? ¿Recuerdas alguna experiencia que te haya marcado? ¿Qué fue lo que te impulsó a introducirte en el mundo de la actuación? Ahora que es posible que VK sea llevado al cine, ¿te atreverías a ser actriz en un libro tuyo llevado a la gran pantalla si te lo propusieran?

''JR: We read in your bio that the theater is one of your passions, and that it has been part of your professional background. Why theater? Can you tell us any experience that has been especially relevant to you? What made you feel interested in acting? Now that it is very likely that VK becomes a movie, would you dare to play in one of your book adaptions if you were asked for?
E. S: I think theatre made me who I am today. I wouldn't be able to speak about my books if I hadn't gained the confidence I did performing for so many years. Also, improv and comedy taught me to think quickly. In writing, I get to be every character and write the dialogue and plot, so I do prefer it to acting. Of course I'd love to be in the movie, but more importantly, I'd just love to get a movie made. ''
E. S: Creo que el teatro me ha convertido en lo que soy. No sería capaz de hablar de mis libros si no hubiera adquirido la confianza en mí misma que adquirí actuando durante tantos años. Además, la improvisación y la comedia me enseñaron a pensar con rapidez. Al escribir, me convierto en cada uno de los personajes y escribo el diálogo y la trama, así que lo prefiero a actuar. Claro que me gustaría participar en la película, pero lo que es más importante, me gustaría que se hiciera la película.

JR: En el primer volumen de la serie Vampire Kisses descubrimos a Raven, una adolescente rebelde muy caracterizada, que es contrastada por su mejor amiga, todo lo contrario a ella, lo que resalta más el personaje de Raven. ¿Qué te llevó a escoger a una chica gótica como protagonista?

''JR: In the first volume of Vampire Kisses we discover Raven, a rebellious teenager. It is a very well drawn character, described in contrast to her best friend, who is exactly her opposite, highlightening Raven even more. What made you choose a gothic girl as the main character of your story?

E. S: I say two goth girls swinging on swings in my conservative town one summer. The image was emblazoned on my brain. I combined the image with a character I'd been wanting to write about --a fearless headstrong girl-- and Raven was born.''

E. S: Vi a dos chicas góticas columpiándose en unos columpios un verano en mi conservadora ciudad. La imagen se me quedó grabada en la mente. Combiné dicha imagen con un personaje sobre el que quería escribir desde hacía ya un tiempo: una chica impetuosa, testaruda y valiente, y así nació Raven.


JR: Durante el desarrollo de la historia VK se hace mención en varias ocasiones de una autora muy querida en la literatura vampírica: Anne Rice, a la que Raven adora como a una reina. ¿Podrías decir que es una de tus autoras favoritas como lo es para tu personaje? ¿Hay algún libro de ella que te haya gustado y te haya influido como escritora?

''JR: Throughout the story in VK the name of a very esteemed author of vampire literature is mentioned in various occasions: Anne Rice, who Raven adores as if she were the queen herself. Could we infer that she is one of your favourite writers as she is one of your character's favourite? Is there any book by Anne Rice that has especially influenced you as a writer?

E. S: No, I'm afraid I didn't read much... But Anne Rice is Raven's favorite author. I did meet her--just as Raven describes in the book. My sister-in-law at the time was really into her novels and we were in New Orleans taking an Anne Rice tour. We were standing outside her house when this limo pulls around the corner and Anne Rice steps out! My sister-in-law was speechless. Anne Rice was totally cool and posed for pictures. She was more than amazing!''

E. S: No me temo que no la he leído mucho... Pero, sí, Anne Rice es la autora favorita de Raven. Sí que la conocí, tal y como Raven lo describe en el libro. Mi cuñada era, por aquel entonces, una gran fan de sus libros, y estábamos en New Orleáns haciendo el tour Anne Rice. Estábamos justo delante de su casa cuando, de repente, una limusina para en la esquina y ¡sale Anne Rice! Mi cuñada se quedó boquiabierta sin poder articular palabra. Anne Rice fue genial y posó para las fotos. ¡Fue maravillosa!


JR: Aparte de Vampire Kisses, has publicado otros libros. ¿Podrías hablarnos de ellos a todos tus fans españoles?

''JR: Apart from Vampire Kisses you have published other books, could you tell all your Spanish fans about them?

E. S: Teenage Mermaid is the love story of a modern day mermaid and a surfer-dude she saves from drowning. In doing so, he grabs the heirloom necklace off of her. The both look for each other, on land and sea, and discover that they have more than an antique necklace in common. Comedy Girl is about a shy girl who dreams of becoming a stand-up comedienne. When her dream is realized and she becomes popular in school, she suddenly has to make decisions she's never had to before--choosing a career or true love.''

E. S: Teenage Mermaid es una historia de amor entre una sirena moderna y un surfero al que salva de ahogarse. Al salvarlo, él le quita un collar que es una reliquia familiar. Ambos se buscan, por tierra y por mar y descubren que tienen mucho más en común que un antiguo collar. Comedy Girl es la historia de una chica muy tímida que sueña en convertirse en cómica. Cuando su sueño se hace realidad y adquiere popularidad en la escuela, se ve enfrentada a tomar una decisión que no ha tomado jamás: escoger entre su carrera profesional o su verdadero amor.


JR: ¿Tienes algún proyecto en marcha o alguna historia en la que hayas pensado y te gustaría escribir? En ese caso, ¿podrías desvelarnos algo de ello?

''JR: Is there any project in progress or any other story that you have thought about and you would like to write about? If that were the case, could you reveal any of it to us?

E. S: I've begun another vampire story--with some supernatural twists and turns. Some of it's on paper and some of it's swimming in my head. :)''
E. S: He empezado a escribir otra historia de vampiros, con algunos toques sobrenaturales. Parte de ello ya está en papel y parte aún lo tengo en la cabeza. :)


JR: En tu página (www.ellenschreiber.com) mencionas que si tuvieras que elegir a un actor para Alexander, nuestro chico vampiro, escogerías a Ben Barnes (El Príncipe Caspian), pero… ¿y para Raven?

''JR: In your web page (www.ellenschreiber.com) you said that if you had to choose an actor to play Alexander, our vampire boy, you would choose Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian), but...who would you choose to play Raven?

E. S: Maybe Ellen Page? I get a lot of emails from readers who have their own ideas. If the movie ever comes to fruition, I'm sure I would look up those emails I've saved and check out the readers ideas.''

E. S: ¿Quizás Ellen Page? Recibo muchos mails de parte de lectores que tienen sus propias ideas. Si alguna vez se hace la película, estoy segura que miraré esos mails que he guardado y rescataré algunas de las ideas de mis lectores.


JR: ¿Cuáles han sido tus mayores influencias a la hora escribir? ¿Tienes alguna manía cuándo escribes: Así como escuchar música, un horario determinado…?

''JR: As a writer, who have you been influenced by the most? Do you follow any pattern when you are writing such as listening to music, a specific timetable...?
E. S: If I'm on a deadline I write 24/7. I sometimes force myself to take a break--so I can clear my head. I take walks and watch movies to get me inspired--or to chill out when my fingers get cramped. I do listen to music--whatever I'm into at the time. I've been listening to Moulin Rouge and I love Sweeney Todd.''

E. S: Si tengo una fecha de entrega, escribo las 24 horas del día, los siete días de la semana. A veces me obligo a darme un descanso, para despejarme. Doy paseos y veo películas para inspirarme, o para relajarme cuando ya tengo calambres en los dedos. Escucho música...lo que sea que me guste en ese momento. He estado escuchando Moulin Rouge y me encanta Sweeney Todd.


JR: La relación entre Raven y su hermano pequeño, al que llama “El Raro” tiene un significado importante. ¿Tienes hijos en los que te hayas inspirado para describir las muestras de afecto entre los dos hermanos? ¿Podrías adelantarnos algún detalle de lo que ocurrirá entre ellos en las siguientes entregas de VK mientras esperamos su traducción?

''JR: The relationship between Raven and her kid brother, whom she calls Nerd Boy, has an important significance in the story. Do you have any kids of your own on whom you might have based the descriptions of their shows of affection? Could you tell us any detail of what will happen between them in the next volumes of VK as we wait for them to be translated into Spanish?

E. S: I loosely base Nerd Boy on a kid in our neighborhood who got picked on. I have two older brothers, so I know what it's like to be the baby of the family and be annoying. Other than that, the two siblings just appeared as I wrote them. I do like how they grow and change--just like real siblings. In the novels, in Vampire Kisses 4, Raven must save Billy from the youngest Maxwell sibling, Valentine. ''
E. S: Para el personaje de El Raro me basé, en líneas generales, en un chico de nuestro vecindario con el que la gente se metía. Tengo dos hermanos mayores, así que sé lo que es ser el pequeño de la familia y ser molesto. Por lo demás, los dos hermanos aparecieron a medida que los iba escribiendo. Me gusta como crecen y cambian, como si fueran hermanos de verdad. En las novelas, en Vampire Kisses 4, Raven debe salvar a Billy del más joven de los Maxwell, Valentine.


JR: Cada vez son más los fans que te siguen, en España nos haría mucha ilusión que hicieras una gira de firmas de libros por aquí, ¿habría alguna posibilidad en un futuro cercano de que pasaras por nuestro país?

''JR: The number of fans that you have is increasing day by day, and in Spain we will be very excited if you decided to go on a book signing tour. Would it be likely that you could come to Spain in the near future?

E. S: I would LOVE to come to Spain. I've never been and it would be fabulous to visit your beautiful country.''

E. S: Me ENCANTARÍA ir a España. No he estado nunca y sería fabuloso visitar vuestro precioso país.


JR: Ya para terminar, ¿qué consejo darías a los lectores que les gustaría escribir para un público juvenil?

''JR: And the last one...What would be your advice for those readers who would like to write for a YA audience?

E. S: Just do it. There is nothing stopping you. :)''

E. S: Hacedlo. No hay nada que os lo pueda impedir. :)
